Linux Containers (lxc)
I've recently been playing around with lxc, and it seems like there have been some really great improvements to lightweight virtualization since I was last using it. I just set up NTP and Squid in their own separate containers that are taking less than 3MB of disk space each (not counting the actual cache storage for Squid, just the container). It took me a while to figure out all the things that need to go into base image to get things working (and I'm doing ro,bind mounts to pull most of the libs/bins from the host OS) but I could definitely see using these more. The extra security seems pretty impressive. I haven't thought of any way to break out, even as root, since I don't have any way to create devices, mount anything, chroot, or read any devices other than the limited set I created initially... but I suppose that's only true until there is some exploit found that lets you run something in kernel space... Still, I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

Google Chrome is my new buddy
So today I started my Google Chrome, and sadly all my tabs had been closed! I tend to keep a lot of tabs open for things I want to go back to, and I this sort of thing is something that used to happen regularly in Firefox. I'd just started to go about opening new tabs, when I saw at the bottom of the Chrome New Tab page that it listed all the previously opened tabs from the last session as one item on the "Recently closed" history list! I clicked on it, and viola, all my tabs were restored exactly as I'd left them. I'd seen Chrome's "The last session crashed, do you want to restore?" message before, but this is the first time I've noticed that Chrome tracks all of the tabs open in a window as a single history item. That is a really great feature, even if I've been using it for months before I noticed. :) I'm definitely liking Chrome more every day.

Google over IPv6 on Comcast?
I noticed last night that my Google home page wasn't displaying correctly, and after poking around a minute I realized that the router had somehow dropped my 6to4 default route in the last few days. IOW Google had switched over their main servers to IPv6 for Comcast! I reset the route and it looks like my traffic is now going over IPv6. I also checked at the office, and they aren't IPv6 there, so I'm guessing that this is specific to Comcast residential service, maybe even just service in this area, but I'm still pleased. :)

Damn disrupted stereotypes

If I have to start respecting rednecks, where will it all end?? It's a slippery slope I tell ya.

Today
I had a pretty good day today. I slept in a bit, did a smidgen of workish stuff, and a bit of shopping. Then it was off to buzz's birthday party. It was plenty of fun for me, and hopefully buzz had a good time to. :) I got to see bonefig again for the first time since college. We all played some Rock Band (as usual) and there was snacking and eventually actual dinner (including a never ending pasta salad). At some point triskele and buzz went off to look for a nearby geocache, which was apparently not there, while those remaining played some more Rock Band, and once they came back and we finished the set everyone went in to play Cthulhu Munchkin. I hadn't played Munchkin before, but everyone was fairly helpful, at least early on. Then I voluntarily took the Cultist class, after which I think people became a bit more suspicious. :) I started my recruiting drive with catwithbell at her request. Soon we'd taken over almost the entire table, though buzz was far in the lead. He either wasn't thinking about what he was saying or he forgot the importance of the woman scorned factor, (not sure if that's the best word for it, but regardless I think it was fairly key when playing against 4 women and 1 other man) which took him from "haha now I'll win the game" to "wait, where'd my lead go?", and it was really starting to look like catwithbell would win the game (despite having been a madly kleptomaniacal since the start) when I finally got just the chance to play the cards I'd been secreting away. Most of the smackdown-esque cards had just been used against buzz, so I knew that although everyone would definitely bring out everything remaining against me, I stood a good chance of making it. It ended up that I needed every card I'd saved up, but I had played the cards just right and I won! Hooray! The downside is that I won't be able to rely on my munchkin-virgin-osity next time to help me along, and I don't think I can rely on looks or boyish charm either, so I'll need to come up with some other strategy. :) I'd definitely play it again though.

When I got home I took care of the furballs and let Nibbler Bunny out to play without the cats in the room. This probably isn't funny to anyone who isn't familiar with the layout of my bedroom, but Nibbler was bouncing around on the bed and he spotted the back scratcher we have hanging on the wall behind the bed. He bounced over to it, removed it from its hook, pulled it through the bars of the headboard, and then proceeded to run off with his wonderful stolen treasure. It was very cute.

Gaelic Storm
The concert was great. I left work "early" (actually just at 4pm, which really isn't early, except that many other people had project deadlines that meant many of them were staying later) and drove as quickly as possible (but safely of course, though the thundershower I went through really didn't help) hoping that I wouldn't be late. I arrived with plenty of time, got my tickets, and sat down just as Albannach started playing. Definitely interesting to watch a band that consists of 4 drummers and a guy playing bagpipes. They definitely had plenty of energy, and the sound of the drums really thundered through the area. Then while Scythian was setting up I went a got a pizza, and made it back again in plenty of time. Both of the openers were pretty good and fun to watch. I forgot to get the free sticker from Scythian though, and I didn't get a CD from them either. I'd thought at first that I wouldn't, then I thought maybe I would because "Cubicles and Tylenol" was mildly amusing, but I never got around to it. Finally (around 8pm I think, so there was really no rush at all) Gaelic Storm went on, and was great. They do a good show, and there were plenty of people dancing down by the stage (though I felt like the openers might have tired them out a bit), and there was lots of clapping with the music and sing-a-longs and plenty of energy. There were a bunch of songs I was familiar with, and some I hadn't heard much of. I didn't have the guts to go down to the stage and dance around, but I did talk to a couple friendly people, which is really outgoing for me. I had a good time and I'm definitely glad I went. :)

darn short notice
Hmm, so there's a Gaelic Storm concert tomorrow at the PA Renn Faire, which I only recently found out about. I like Gaelic Storm, but its at 5pm on a Friday, which makes me feel like it will be tough to get there unless I leave work awfully early... Why couldn't they have had it at 8PM in the city or something? :( Well, I'm pretty keen to go anyway... Is anyone else going to the concert, or the Celtic Fling in general? Anyone been before?

Ah, the refined world of online gaming...
Well, I've thought of lots of political and science type things to write about, but I never pick up enough energy to get them down. Instead I'll blather on about gaming... Read more...Collapse )

Final notice to independents and unregistered Democrats
Today is the last day to register as a democrat if you want to vote in the Democrat primary. Just give your local voter registration office and/or elections bureau (see the blue pages of the phone book) a call and they should be able to tell you where they are located so that you can get the forms and turn them in there. It takes five minutes or less, so you can probably go there on your lunch break.

PS - I tried to look the details for my place up online, but they weren't on the county website as far as I could see, so I had to check the phone book. Keep that in mind. Once I had the phone number, I was able to call and verify that I was (previously) registered unaffiliated, so if you aren't sure, just call.

PPS - Also, be sure to vote for Obama when the time comes! :D We have plenty of time to debate that if you disagree, but there's no time to lose to get registered.
